Remarks & Notes
Red Ratchet. Manx Electric Railway (MER) roofed toastrack car 16, one of five built by G.F. Milnes & Co. in 1898, is seen in the lower shed at the railway's Derby Castle Depot. When they were originally built the "ratchet cars" did not have air brakes, relying only on mechanical handbrakes - which gave them their nickname. Car 16 was eventually outfitted with air brakes; a result of multiple trucks swaps over its lifetime.
