Amtrak F40PH 310 leads train 710, the afternoon San Joaquin, heading makes its fourth stop of its trip, which originated in Oakland. Within the next 50 miles this train will leave the San Francisco Bay Area, cross the California Delta and then travel south for another 230 miles or so through the agricultural San Joaquin Valley to Bakersfield. Los Angeles-bound passengers will then board a bus for that segment of their trip. This train has stopped at the then 109-year-old Southern Pacific station, built in 1877. In 2001 a new station was opened across the street – although this classic station, fortunately, still stands. (Martinez, California – June 23, 1986)
