"NYA Delivers New Harsco Undercutter to LI"
On the morning of October 5th, 2024, New York & Atlantic Railway RS-301, with EMD GP38-2 268, is seen shoving brand new Harsco Rail undercutter machine RMSX 1235 down the east let of the wye for interchange at Fresh Pond Yard in Queens, New York. The undercutter was recently acquired by the Long Island Rail Road for use on future track maintenance projects throughout their system.
Per Harsco Rail's website, Harsco Rail undercutters are capable of undercutting trenches and mainline track as well as trenching ballast shoulders. The machine’s robust design allows for efficient operation in extreme fouled ballast conditions, and operation occurs without the requirement to remove track or infrastructure. Spoil is removed and transferred to spoil conveyors for disposal.
