In Mauritania, the disused permanent way material such as steel ties and rails is deposited next to the tracks and remains there. Some of the ties are reused for simple shade, as markings or even for building houses. The old rails lying in the sand like spaghetti are probably about 108 lbs/yard or 54 kg/meter in profile. In the main track on the left are heavy rails of 136 lbs/yard (approx. 67,5 kg/meter).
