Leaving Barstow and heading to northern California on BNSF Railway's Mojave Sub is a westbound freight train, powered by five General Electric BNSF diesels: ES44DC 7729 and Dash 9-44CWs 986 and 4172 on the headend, and Dash 9-44CWs 4644 and 1085 as the rear Distributed Power Units (DPU). This westbound will cross the Mojave Desert for 136 miles, then jump onto Union Pacific's Mojave Sub to cross the Tehachapi Mountains and drop into California's verdant San Joaquin Valley, where, 70 miles later, it will diverge back onto BNSF's Mojave Sub for another 3 miles to reach Bakersfield, and most likely continue northward (railroad "west") to Modesto or Richmond. In the foreground is BNSF's Cajon Sub to Los Angeles. (Barstow, California – November 6, 2007)
