On an extremely brisk and gusty winter day, a long eastbound M42104 descends the Derwood Dip. With a clear signal for a westbound on track one, it will meet its counterpart train, M42206, heading west in a few minutes. To the left is the Shady Grove Metro Station, which marks the northwestern end of the Red Line. It is the most distant Metro station from downtown Washington, D.C., in Maryland. Shady Grove also has one of the largest rail yards and storage facilities on the WMATA Metrorail system.
