With the Chicago Skyline off In the horizon 30 miles to the north, L536 can be viewed with the IC 1000 and 1019 once again, where they are zig-zagging through the Matteson Connection to make the turn eastward onto the Matteson Division for their destination of Kirk Yard In Gary, IN. The connection was constructed shortly after Canadian National acquired the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern In 2009 to help avoid rail congestion around Chicagoland by making a connection between the EJ&E’s former Eastern Division, (current CN Matteson Division) with their former IC Chicago District (current CN Chicago Division) since the former IC was originally a overpass over the former EJ&E with no easy connecting access. Now that Canadian National had ownership under both lines, they finished construction for the connection in 2011, which was a $30 million track project.
