Although it’s been 26 years since the Illinois Central was bought out by Canadian National in 1998, the Illinois Central still lives and runs on their home trackage, as demonstrated here. CN’s L536 job is in view snaking its way through the South Loop of Downtown Chicago with a duo of former Illinois Central SD70 locomotives, 1027 and 1032. Both of these engines still surprisingly wear their Illinois Central livery and roam around their home trackage, even after CN bought out the IC. L536 is a daily transfer job out of Glenn Yard near Midway Airport for references, and it has a destination of Kirk Yard in Gary, IN. This Sunday morning edition of L536 is viewed here in this telephoto photograph on the elevated portion of the Illinois Central’s former Chicago Division through Downtown, where they can be seen crossing State Street, Wabash, and Michigan Ave overhead, and finally at Indiana Ave, where we are positioned to get this head on photo over all the overpasses. Consistent action on the Orange Line overhead made for some great timing on the L with an over under opportunity with both slow moving trains!
