Remarks & Notes
NS 4001, one of Norfolk Southern's DC to AC rebuilt locomotives, descends down the grade between Crozier Canyon and Valentine as it leads 65 loads of autoracks bound for Richmond, CA. Unlike Norfolk Southern's other AC44C6M locomotives, NS 4001 is painted in a blue and silver paint scheme to represent it being the second locomotive to be rebuilt for Norfolk Southern's DC to AC project. NS 4000, the first locomotive to be rebuilt, also has this paint scheme. NS 4001 was originally built as a GE Dash 9-40C #8879 in 1995. It was rebuilt to NS 4001 in January 2016. In April, 2017 it was involved in a derailment in McVeytown, PA. NS rebuilt the locomotive again and finished repairs in 2019.
