Maryland Midland train UBHF (Union Bridge-Highfield, MD turn) negotiates the horseshoe curve in Sabillasville, MD which is one of the most iconic shots on the railroad. Look through the trees and you'll get a feel for the 2 percent grade the train is descending headed east for Union Bridge. A couple of big changes occurred not long after this shot was taken in November 2024. First, the last remaining SD40M-2 which is second out in this consist had its engine block disabled to comply with Genesee & Wyoming's EPA settlement; SD50s are now the only six-axle power on the line. Second, the bulk of CSX interchange now occurs on the east end at Emory Grove, MD (Glyndon on a map) making big consists such as this one a thing of the past. The UBHF trains are now typically two units and a handful of cars.
