Having delivered Amtrak train 3, the westbound Southwest Limited from Chicago to Los Angeles, the power (Santa Fe F45 5920, F45 5921, F7B 308A and steam-generator car 133, decked out for the upcoming US Bicentennial) is having steam-generator water tanks refilled at Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal after the cars has been taken to the coach yard for servicing.
Wondering about these freight diesels operating for Amtrak? Rather than selling locomotives to Amtrak, Santa Fe leased power to Amtrak for trains operated on their rails, as they were eventually added to the pool of freight locomotives after Amtrak acquired new power. While ATSF's FP45s were equipped with steam-generators, the last 20 of their freight F45 locomotives, ATSF 1920-1939 (later renumbered to 5920-5939), were delivered with through steam lines to allow them to be used in passenger service as well, provided at least one other locomotive had steam-generators – in this case, that F7B – as well as the baggage car converted to a steam-generator car.
