Amtrak train 3, the Southwest Chief, departed Chicago with two operating P42DCs (93 and 116), one dead-heading unit (113) and 10 cars. By the time the Chief got to Colorado, 116 had died, and 113 could not be started. So FURX SD40-2 8130 was added. But … it was cut off in Barstow, and BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4149 was added. By that time, however, the damage was done as the train was now over 7 hours late into Los Angeles. As the morning's rain has stopped, that's a small – extremely small – consolation for the passengers. (Fullerton, California – January 27, 2008)
