Broad-Ridge Beginning.
A pair of Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) B-IV cars sit at the terminal station for the Broad-Ridge Spur, preparing to depart as a B3 train to Fern Rock Transportation Center. The spur is a remnant of larger unfinished plans for subways in Philadelphia, which would have included a loop running under 8th St, Walnut St, 15th St, and Arch St. Beginning in 1949, service on the spur was through-routed with the "Bridge Line" over the Benjamin Franklin Bridge to Camden, NJ. This operation ended in 1953 though, when spur service was truncated to 8th & Market and Bridge Line service was extended to 15th-16th & Locust. This section of the station was constructed in 1968 as a new, separate terminal for Ridge Spur trains; Bridge Line service was discontinued and transferred to the Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) in December of that year, with the new service beginning on the full line from Philadelphia to Lindenwold in February 1969.
