The 7.65-kilometre-long, meter-gauge line from Altstätten Stadt to Gais via Stoss with several rack sections (Strub system) with a maximum gradient of 16 % was built in 1911 by the Altstätten-Gais Railway, was later part of the SGA (St.Gallen-Gais-Appenzell-Altstätten Railway) and has belonged to Appenzeller Bahnen since 2006. The trains, consisting of a BDeh 4/4 cogwheel railcar and an ABt driving trailer, run every hour. Train 3148 on the S24 line from Altstätten Stadt to Gais is entering the Kreuzstrasse stop, with ABt # 121 driving trailer, BDeh 4/4 # 16 railcar and X # 1001 bicycle transport carriage.
