Here is something that you don't see every day. This is basically a U30C with a structual cowl constructed over it. This model was unique to the Santa Fe and only 6 were ever built. Origanally numbered 400-405 and painted in the silver and red warbonnet scheme for passenger service, they were later repainted and renumbered 8000-8005 and then hauled frieght. These six U30CG's were the last passenger units purchased by the Santa Fe. They were new in late 1967 and were in passenger service for only about 2 years before being reassigned to freight duty in 1969. #404 was renumbered to #8004 in early 1970 and repainted to the blue/yellow warbonnet shortly thereafter. It was traded in to GE within months after this picture was taken. |
