| Power for the local job A713 stands gaurd at the Dog House while the crew has broke for lunch. The 2502 which was built for Seaboard Coast Line in 1973 and has seen many changes over the years. Only if this old work horse could talk, the stories it could tell. In recent times the unit has been mated to Road Mate 2349 which is rebuilt from a GP38. The 2502 is one of few GP38-2s on the roster set up as slug mothers and in past time was used in hump service while mated to Yard Mates that were rebuilt from Chessie GP9s. Most of these units are now mated to SD40-2s and still serve in yard service. The 2502 has long since lost it classic Mars light but still sports it's head light in the as built postion. It is getting increasingly hard to find out dated schemes on CSX such as the old blue and gray paint still worn by the 2502. The yellow ends were applied due to visibilty issues. The most recent change to the 2502 is the horn relocation. A new horn has been applied and placed on the rear section of the long hood just in front of the nuber one dynamic brake fan. Other addtions to the appearance of the 2502 and her sisters is FRA mandated ditch lights and GPS tracking systems along with most recent ruling of reflective side sill striping. Many changes have been made to these units and more may be in their future, but this EMD product from 1973 should give it's owner many more years of dependable service. With the ever increasing safety conscious industry of railroading striving to be the best, it is only as good as the workers and the equipment they use on a daily bases. |
