Remarks & Notes |
James Hill's Great Northern mainline has withstood the tests of time and nature and today remains one of the vital arteries for moving freight traffic between the east and west. One thousand, seven hundred and twenty-eight miles from Minnesota's Twin Cities -- give or take a few due to line changes over the years -- an empty grain train battles the 2.2% climb up Stevens Pass in the midst of a late-winter blizzard. The storm had barely gotten started when this photo was taken; over the course of the afternoon and evening, nearly another foot of snow would get dumped on the Skykomish area with even greater accumulation at higher altitudes. |
