Remarks & Notes |
A Man and His Office - Veteran ARR Conductor Steve Culver is framed in the partially open rear baggage door as he talk to his engineer on his hand held radio. Out in front of him is "Sherman City Hall" buried nearly to the roof line in snow. This lone home constitutes the entire community! Accessible only by the ARR, this little weekly train provides the hearty residents of Alaska's remote and beautiful backcountry with their only connection to the outside world. Cluttering the area around Steve are the various bags, supplies, and provisions that he will hand down to the locals as they leave the train at numerous remote points in the wilderness along the ARR mainline between Talkeetna and Hurricane. |
