| In 2009, railroads idled whole fleets of locomotives in response to the massive decrease in traffic that resulted from the economic downturn. With seemingly every BNSF train in the Northwest powered by a pack of wide-cab GEs, you can imagine my surprise and delight to find the M-SPOPAS climbing up Providence Hill on the second-to-last day of summer with a trio of ancient SD40-2s at full roar, the 106 heavy cars hanging off the drawbar yet one more easily-handled challenge in a career full of hard work. |
