The Ferrocarril Electrico al Pacifico was an electrified 42 inch gauge line that ran from the capital of San Jose to the Pacific port of Puntarenas. At San Jose it connected with the steam/diesel Atlantic railway which ran to Puerto Limon on the Carribean coast. The FEalP took delivery of new electric locomotives as late as 1981, but electric operation ceased around 1986, and the line was closed by landslides in 1995. More recently attempts have been made to reopen parts for tourist and commuter service, but it is unclear how much of the railroad is still operating, although two years ago on a brief visit I did see a diesel hauled train moving outside of Puntarenas. The Atlantic line suffered a similar fate, with no through service but apparently some tourist and freight operations out of Puerto Limon.
