Many a short line led a hand-to-mouth existence. Norfolk, Franklin and Danville and its predecessor, the Atlantic and Danville, surely fell into this category. Before N&W purchased the A&D and changed the name, the old A&D boxcar and an inspection pit were the extent of the shop at Lawrenceville, VA. N&W added a metal building that kept the two man shop force out of the elements, but neglected to add doors. When the wind blew, it was like a wind tunnel. On the evening of April 23, 1980, RS-11 No. 204 was resting in the shop. A sharp eye can barely see the faded Atlantic and Danville lettering on the boxcar.
