What a spectacle! I remember setting up at the big cut at Erda for an NPLA coming west out of Salt Lake City. As the train rounded the bend I thought to myself, WOW..a shiny, clean Chicago & North Western C44-9W leader...and then...a bright red box car, and then another, and then another... The era of relatively new C&NW power leading UP trains was in full swing by 1995 and R.J. Corman's fleet of new box cars were unblemished. The Great Salt Lake and Stansbury Island offered a stunning backdrop to this unforgettable moment along UP's Lyndyll Subdivision, some 25 miles west of downtown Salt Lake City. Note truck traffic heading west along I-80 and the former Western Pacific mainline to Oakland.
