Remarks & Notes |
Time to Plow! - The blades are whirling as White Pass & Yukon's "rotary fleet" has arrived at its namesake summit with vintage snowplow #3 (Cooke - 1899) leading the way trailed by twin steam locomotives #73 (Baldwin 2-8-2 blt. 5-47) and #69 (Baldwin 2-8-0 blt. 4-07) and coach 211. This location is 20.5 miles from tidewater at Skagway, AK and 2885 ft higher in elevation. While the ground was bare and try there, here at the summit it is an entirely different world. 20+ ft high drifts filling the cuts and blowing snow provided quite the adventure for the 20 paying guests who rode the chase train north to watch the spectacle. The green and yellow shovel nose of the chase trains diesels can be seen beyond the rotary train. Note the stone obelisk at the extreme upper right corner of the image. This denotes the international boundary. The plow train is in Canada while the passenger train is still in the US. |
