After the retirement of the Alco fleet the CNW tried many combination's of units on the various jobs in the Escanaba area. The Dumper job which had been home to either a pair of C628's or a C628 with a smaller 4 axle Alco was fairly problematic. First tried was a single EMD SD45, 50 or 60, not quite enough oomph. Next was a pair, but that was deemed wasteful as it was more power than needed and the CNW didn't have high hp hoods to waste. SD40-2's were tried but it was always the same story, not enough juice with a single, to much with a pair. Finally these rebuilt SD24's that CNW had decided to label as SD18's were brought in and had fairly good success on the job. They lasted on the dumper into the UP era in Upper Michigan.
This will be photos that were taken north of Green Bay on the C&NW ore lines. Mainly photos of ore trains will be in this album along with some manifest trains and switch jobs that worked the area.
