UP's Lynndyl Subdivision exits the Salt Lake Valley rather abruptly at Lake Point, where the mainline curves along the north slope of the Oquirrh Mountains south toward the Tooele Valley. Here a Herzog ballast empty squeals around the foot of Oquirrhs, just west of Lake Point siding. The Great Salt Lake is beginning to rise, showing the effects of a wet winter season and spring runoff. While watching trains at Lake Point is entertaining, sailing along the briny waters of the Great Salt Lake would likely be far more adventurous.
