Remarks & Notes |
Rock Island Bridge - This is one of those signature locations I've admired for years and always wanted to see for myself. Finally I got to check the box this summer after a relaxing day on the Scenic Sub I made it farther east than I ever have before while checking out the remarkable west end of the Columbia River Sub. This unique structure was originally constructed in 1892 by the Edgemoor Bridge Works of Wilmington, Delaware and comprises the inner truss structure. As trains grew ever heavier the GN contracted with the American Bridge Company to add the outer truss spans in 1925 completing what is still in service nearly 120 years after the original span crossed the great river. Two units lead this Tacoma-St. Paul stack train east after changing crews and setting out three units just a short while earlier and a few miles to the west in downtown Wenatchee. |
