Remarks & Notes
A freshly painted UP SW10 switches loaded ballast hoppers in the old WP yard at Garfield, Utah. This trackage was relocated a few hundred feet to the north a decade ago when Kennecott's ore tailings pond #2 was constructed (see the reference point on the Google Map). The iconic 1215 ft. high by 120 ft. diameter smokestack, used at the Garfield Smelter was completed in 1974. It is the tallest free-standing structure west of the Mississippi River, the fourth tallest smokestack in the world, and the thirty-third tallest free-standing structure on earth. The stack sees little use today as most of Kennecott's sulfur dioxide waste gas is sold as liquified sulfuric acid, used in the production of fertilizer in Pocatello, Idaho.
