Westbound Detroit, Toledo & Ironton freight train passing the Michigan Central station in downtown Detroit, Michigan, on September 5, 1976. The station was built in 1912-13 and remained in use until 1988. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 but currently needs significant restoration work. Canadian National subsidiary Grand Trunk Western acquired the DT&I in 1980 and fully assimilated it in 1983. Photograph by John F. Bjorklund and courtesy of the Center for Railroad Photography & Art.
My favorite railroad when I was young and even today. When I was growing up I can remember seeing these big orange beasts lumbering around the Jackson shops and yard.
