Friends of the Rail's class 19D climbs towards Van der Merwe Siding and Rayton. This is the last section of main line in South Africa that sees frequent steam working. In the 1970s Panpoort was a favourite place for railfans to watch Alco-built Class 15CAs work main line trains.
