A Santa Fe eastbound crawls through a slow order past the site of the derailment just north of Highway 138 in Cajon Pass. Heavy rains cause track damage in the area, requiring work crews to repair the track. As crews were working in the early morning hours, Santa Fe 3279 East came around the corner and apparently hit a front-end loader at 5:10 am, causing the derailment. The train was traveling at 23 mph, there was one injury, thankfully no fatalities. the locomotives that derailed were ATSF 3279, ATSF 2959, ATSF 3282, and ATSF 3338.
