On a seemingly normal Thursday morning, one of the few remaining Hitachi sets rolls into platform 3 at Flinders Street station, with the Elizabeth Street clock tower in the background. Little did I know that only a couple of hours later this very train would hit a heat buckle near Croydon (the ambient air temperature was around 38C° - 100F°), causing the middle four cars to derail. Fortunately the train was lightly loaded and there were no serious injuries. With these trains close to retirement anyway, this set was stored and never ran again.
