Remarks & Notes
Work continues to open the mainline at Walcott after a broken rail led to a derailment the weekend of Labor Day, 1977. Hulcher crews assist in the cleanup, putting the spilled ballast to good use under the panel track. Today Walcott is an IAIS town, the double main through town has been trimmed to one and hundreds of semis whiz by daily just outside town over I-80 unless they stop at the Walcott Truck Stop at the interchange, one of the largest in the USA. Note the street names in the village on the map--they are mostly names of Rock Island officials--who led the charge west to build this railroad post 1853 when the town was founded.
