Remarks & Notes |
Northern Explorer train from Auckland to Wellington hauled by DFB in Toll Rail livery. The train is about to enter Tawa 2 Tunnel which at about 3 miles (4.5Km) is the longest on the North Island Main Trunk and longest double track tunnel in NZ. This section is a grade easement deviation built late 1930's. The length of tunnels did not favor steam power for frequent trains and so it was electrified. Even freight trains were often electric hauled to Paekakariki until dieselised in 1960's. |
