Mixed service to Sumpter. W.H. Eccles Lumber Company Heisler #3 grinds its way west toward Sumpter Station with a mixed freight and passenger consist on a late fall afternoon. The 3-ft gauge Sumpter Valley Railway served the lumber and mining industries in Eastern Oregon from the late 1800s until the late 1940s, when the rails were lifted and the ROW was abandoned. The present-day Sumpter Valley Railroad is a tourist line that was formed in 1971. It runs a small portion of the original route, from Sumpter to McEwen, Oregon, a distance of about 5 miles. The railroad owns three of the old SVRy's original steam locomotives, two of which are operable. The line also owns an interesting and eclectic mix of narrow gauge rolling stock from several railroads, including the Sumpter Valley, White Pass & Yukon, Denver & Rio Grande Western, and East Broad Top...among others.
