After 42 years of service, Melbourne's stainless steel 'Hitachi' trains have finally been withdrawn. On Saturday 12th of April 2014 electric preservation group Elecrail chartered one of the remaining sets for a farewell tour, visiting Cragieburn, South Morang and Sunbury. The train is seen here at South Morang along with crowds of railfans. The destination board is showing Coldstream, a location on a now closed line that was never electrified. On the return to the city the train was unfortunately attacked by an organised group of graffiti vandals, who disabled the train at Clifton Hill and sprayed the rear car. The train was attacked again later in the day at Essendon. Despite these events spirits on board remained high. One six car set (not the one used on this tour) is to be preserved by Elecrail.
