Remarks & Notes
Save the Station – The Raritan River Railroad Historical Society and Milltown Historical Society are teaming up to raise funds to move and preserve the only remaining station of the Raritan River Railroad (RRRR). Originally built in the late 1880s to serve brick companies, the RRRR saw its first passenger train in1891. This station was built in the early 1900s. As World War I hit the United States, an average of 22 passenger trains were running and about 9000 passengers came through the station daily. But in the 1930s, the Depression hit Milltown and the last passenger train ran in 1938. Many of the stations along the line were torn down, while this one was converted to a Freight Station and remained in operation until the 1960s. Today the rail line is still in service as part of the Conrail Shared Asset, while the station resides on private property. The owner has agreed to donate the station to the town for $1 with the stipulation that it is moved off the property. Approval to move the station to County Open-Space property, which is only a few hundred yards away, has been granted. Still close to the railroad tracks, the location is ideal for the town to keep a historical station for years to come. So far $10,000 has been raised, but there is still a long way to go.
