Standing on the foot bridge next to the Community Center in Orono, Maine, Pan AM westbound MABA poked out from a tree tunnel on September 15, 2014. This kind of view along Pan Am's District 1 will soon be a thing of the past with a pending change of traffic patterns away from Mattawamkeag on New Brunswick Southern. The "new" route would be to send cars via Central Maine & Quebec from Northern Maine Junction to Brownville Junction. Then NBSR would take cars East to Saint John. An extra 20+ miles of overall mileage would be added, but the higher speeds of CMQ and NBSR would more than take care of the difference. What date the transition will actually take place has yet to be determined. Until then, PAR trains will role as normal though the farthest eastern reaches of the old Maine Central territory.
