Canadian Pacific’s Expressway service, operating between Milton (just west of Toronto) and Montreal, is essentially dedicated TOFC. With heavy congestion on the MacDonald Cartier Freeway (aka the 401) it’s marketed as a faster, more efficient way to move highway trailers between the two cities.
For several months in 2001, pairs of SD40-2Fs were assigned to this service. It seemed like an ideal match, as there was little switching enroute, and the operation was much like that of a passenger train, with scheduled departure and arrival times.
CP 9005 & 9014 pictured here are eastbound. Today, these trains run in darkness.
