Utah Ry. #2003 leads six other mates eastbound through downtown Price, Utah. This huge 7 unit helper set is destined for the wye for the Savage Spur between Price and Wellington, Utah. It will meet up there with a loaded UTAH coal train and cut into the train right on the mainline of the Union Pacific Green River Sub. This manned helper set will then assist the coal train westbound through UP’s Helper Yard and up the 2.4% grade in Price River Canyon to the crossovers at Colton, Utah, about 5 or 6 miles short of Soldier Summit. The helpers will cut out of the train at Colton and return downgrade to Martin Yard. It is unusual to see any 4 axle power on the Utah Ry. here in coal country. The 2003 likely was at the Martin Locomotive Shop for inspection or maintenance and is being given a “shakedown cruise” on this coal train before returning to the Salt Lake valley.
