Remarks & Notes
Boston & Providence Railroad 4-4-0 "Daniel Nason"
& Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe 2-10-4 No. 5011

The oldest steam locomotive in the MOT collection and one of the oldest surviving locomotives in the nation, the “Daniel Nason” was built between 1858 and 1863 by the Boston & Providence Railroad in its Roxbury, MA, shop. This locomotive is the only surviving “insider” a design popular with railroads before the Civil War, with cylinders and main driving rods between (rather than outside of) the locomotive side frames. Donated in 1987 by the "Friends of the Danbury Collection."

To the right is AT&SF 2-10-4 No. 5011 built by Baldwin in 1944. The AT&SF 2-10-4's were the last steam locomotives purchased by the Santa Fe in an effort to carry the railroad until new diesels could be purchased after WWII. Sister #5021 survives at the CA State RR Museum, both with less then 13 years of service!
