Remarks & Notes |
One of two Delaware & Hudson bicentennial units brings an eastbound train through the unmistakable profile of the Lehigh Gap. When the highway through the gap was widened to be four lanes in 1960, the only way to fit it between the Jersey Central by the river and the Lehigh & New England bridge abutment was to cantilever the eastbound and westbound lanes. A huge rock outcropping next to the L&NE abutment was removed as part of the project. An L&NE concrete telephone box is still visible above the billboard. |
