Remarks & Notes
On the last day of 1966, Burlington’s Longmont local out of Denver trundles along north of Broomfield, as faithful and reliable as an old dog. Led by SD9s 326 and 363, cars for cement loading, petroleum, and a string of empty gons for the Great Western sugar plant make up today’s consist. In the late 1950s while other railroads were buying EMD’s GP9s by the hundreds, Burlington and subsidiary Colorado & Southern turned to the less-popular six-axle SD9, impressed by its considerable pulling power, eventually ending up with 103, more than any other railroad except SP. Most survived the 1970 merger to become Burlington Northern engines. Possibly a few are around today, working on tourist railroads and a short line or two.
