The Ontario Northland instituted a Toronto to Timmins passenger service in 1977 called the Northlander. The ONR purchased retired TEE trainsets from Europe for this train, but found the locomotives to be unreliable. In 1980, they retired the original locomotives and modified FP7s to power the trainsets. The trains ran in this configuration until 1992 when the TEE coaches were retired. Sadly, the Northlander itself was discontinued in 2012. This info comes from a webpage by Rob Godby from the University of Wyoming. Here FP7 #1985 departments Toronto with the northbound Northlander on a hot and hazy Summer day in 1984.
