| As the sun rises above the mountain tops its warm glow begins to reunite with the eastern slope of Union Pacific's fabled crossing of the Tehachapi mountains in southern California. Against the hustle and bustle of traffic on near by California highway 58 a faint roar begins to encroach on an otherwise quiet morning in the Cache Creek narrows. Almost as a master soundtrack foreshadows the arrival of the antagonist the faint roar becomes thunderous. Reverberating off the canyon walls the pulse seems to shake the earth as raw horsepower defies gravity on the torturous climb to the summit. Betrayed by the boiling 'tail' escaping from the trio of road motors running point its position is known well before the headlights peak into view. Ah, just another morning on the mountain. |
