Remarks & Notes |
The 14.31 Nuremberg to Dresden D-Zug passes the former DDR border station at Gutenfürst in Sachsen, just north of Hof, behind a Russian built 'Ludmilla' Co-Co diesel. Before the wall came down in 1989 and reunification in October 1990 all trains had to stop here and were thoroughly searched by the DDR border guards, especially trains going into West Germany for any persons trying to escape the communist regime hence all the lighting towers.
I had found this location by driving down a small country lane from Hof which became a rough stone track though the area where the border ran - the road had only been opened up a few weeks previously. As I waited for this train on a bridge a uniformed man pulled up in a Trabant car. I thought here comes trouble but he showed me his railwayman's peaked cap which had been lying on the front seat and told me he was the signalman at the box you can seen in the distance and would I like to visit the box which I did after I had taken this photo. |
