The crew of the 698 ties down at Corning for the evening along the West Virginia Secondary (NS) after doubling the first half of their train to Thurston, Ohio. This would be the last of five test loads from Buckingham Coal bound for Homer City, PA. Unfortunately, this would also be the last Norfolk Southern train of any type on the line from New Lexington to Thurston, Ohio. The G&W (I&O) still runs here five days a week on a coal shuttle to the power plant in Conesville, Ohio. The following afternoon the crew of 698 would proceed north to Thurston, pick up the other half of the train, and proceed to Columbus.
