Remarks & Notes
A westbound hotshot sails along Union Pacific's Laramie Subdivision passing the location of Fort Steele. Originally constructed in 1868 to protect Union Pacific's transcontinental railroad as it crossed the North Platte River, the fort served until 1886 when it was abandoned. Much of the fort and surrounding support structures (which once occupied the field above the lead motors) have been lost over the years but the site is listed on National Register of Historic Places. Visible at right distance the old bridge tenders house still stands near the bridge over the North Platter River.
