Remarks & Notes |
Trading distance for elevation Southern Pacific's Civil Engineer William Hood was able to take his railroad out of the Caliente Valley and over the once thought insurmountable Tehachapis. In just 6 rails miles Hood's road climbed 700' in elevation leaving the floor of the Caliente Valley, the same distance as the crow flies was separated by 1 mile. Following the grade carved into Tehachapi's rolling hills in 1876, eastbound Union Pacific tonnage conforms to the Allard Horseshoe curve as it climbs through the Tehachapis. |
