Retired from the Southern Pacific roster on January 8th, 1987, SW900R (some call them SW900Es, but I'll defer to what Joe "Mr. Espee" Strapac calls them) 1196 sits in Roseville, California, on February 13th of the same year. Built by EMD in June 1954 as SP SW900 4628, this switcher was later renumbered to 1174 in the railroad's big 1965 renumbering (in which they ). In july 1987 SP 1196 was sold to locomotive dealer George Silcott, who sold it to Eveready Battery Company (Newport News VA), where it retained the number 1196. In 1997 it was sold again to Larry's Truck Electric, who sold it a few months later to Archer-Daniels-Midland/Corn Sweeteners in Cedar Rapids, IA (who also kept the number 1196).
