One year after the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad began operations, two friends and I made the pilgrimage to see the new Alco center of the universe. Arriving at the Fayetteville airport by early afternoon, we immediately drove to the road’s Springdale headquarters, where we learned that the nocturnal Monette turn was late, and still a few miles north of town. We hustled to Lowell, where we had our first encounter with a A&M road train, nicely powered with five C420’s, including a few old friends from the L&HR/Conrail. It was a nice welcome.
